Tour of Duty: Day Shift

As
an RN assigned to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), the nurse is primarily
responsible for applying the nursing process to the care of postoperative
patients. This includes, but is not limited to, assuring that appropriate
documentation reflects patient assessments, interdisciplinary treatment plans,
clinical interventions, and evaluation of patients' responses to
treatment. The nurse is also responsible for assigning and evaluating the
work of non-nursing direct care providers assigned to the PACU. The
incumbent may be required to! work past their tour of duty in the event of
add-on surgeries. In ! addition, the nurse delivers fundamental,
knowledge-based care to adult and geriatric patients while developing technical
competence in accordance with the Michigan Nurse Practice Act, Medical Center,
and VAHQ standards of practice. The incumbent provides direct nursing care to
individual and groups of patients under the guidance and direction of the PACU
Nurse Manager and assists with the direction and supervision of ancillary
personnel (i.e., Clerks).

As
a Staff Nurse you will provide prescribed medical treatment and personal care
services to ill and injured veterans. Duties include documenting
observations, assessments, and changes in patient's condition; collaborating
with health team members to facilitate positive patient care outcomes;
providing a full range of nursing care to patients with a variety of physical
and/or behavior problems; and accountable for meeting and maintaining the
qualification standards! and functional statements of assigned grade. Our
facility is seeking individuals who possess good organizational skills which
enable completion of work, a demonstrated ability to assume leadership in a
patient centered program, and the ability to establish effective communication
with patients, families, visitors and members of the interdisciplinary team.

Preferred
Experience. Critical care and
recovery experience preferred. BLS/ACLS
certification. Knowledge of ASPAN
(American Society of Peri-Anesthesia Nurses) Standards preferred.

Physical

Requirements :
This position requires Heavy Lifting,
45 pounds & over; heavy carrying, 45 pounds& over; straight pulling (4
hours); pushing (4 hours); use of fingers; both hands required; walking &
standing 8-12 hours; repeated bending 8 hours; both legs required; ability for
rapid mental & muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable !
@ 13Â" to 16Â" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye ! to 20/20 and
to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish shades of
colors; hearing (aide permitted). Transferring patients and objects may be
required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated
materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation
situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be
exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or
psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible
individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to
shift priorities based on patient needs.
Relocation expenses
will not be reimbursed.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
·
U.S.
citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified
citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

·
Full
unrestricted Licensure, Certifi! cation, or Registration required.

·
Graduate of a
school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting
agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time
the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing
Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing
Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing,
possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the
requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • The completion of coursework
equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for
professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved
course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate
of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA! along with a copy of the
MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 50! 05, Appendix G6).

  • Current, full, active, and
unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State,
Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the
District of Columbia.

  • Must be proficient in spoken
and written English.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Experience as a RN will be evaluated to
determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to
the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice,
Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each
dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies
for VHA Nursing Personnel.

education/career development;
