The CV Surgery Service Line Supervisor provides daily leadership to department staff, coordinates the daily operations, provides staff feedback, and is proactive! in providing customer service to internal and external customers. The Supervisor is responsible for the direction and supervision of the patient care team including direct involvement in the performance management processes of hiring, discharging, staff orientation and training and performance evaluation. The patient care team is typically made up of RNs and support staff including Surgical Techs, First Assists, Certified Nurse Assistants, Licensed Practical Nurses and Technical Care Associates but may involve other caregivers as needed. The Supervisor will direct the patient care team, assigning and reassigning staff as appropriate to meet patient care needs. The Supervisor will assess the needs of each patient for whom he or she is responsible, as well as the individual skills and abilities of the available staff, and, by the application of critical thinking and independent judgment, will determine team assignments to achieve desired outcomes. The Supervisor will also be! proactive in identifying and mediating department conflict, i! ncluding conflict between staff and physicians ensuring a respectful and safe environment for all.
Additionally, the CV Surgery Service Line Supervisor is responsible for providing direct RN nursing care to the patient by systematically applying specialized knowledge and skill as derived from the biological, physical, and behavioral sciences, to the care, treatment, counsel and education of patients with full implementation of the five phases of the nursing process and professional standards of care.
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Supervises the care of the patient by assigning and directing the health care team as appropriate to ensure achievement of desired outcomes, quality measures, and efficient utilization of resources.
2. Provides direct nursing care to adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient populations through full implementation of the five phases of the nursing process and professional standards of care.
3. Supervi! ses patient care team, including assignment, direction, and, where necessary, implementing or recommending corrective action/disciplinary action.
4. Delegates to and collaborates with other members of the Health System as appropriate in coordinating patient care.
5. Oversees the delivery of care to the patient and is responsible for ensuring that other care givers are following established protocols by standard and operating within appropriate scope of practice.
6. Provides patient education and oversees the health care team in doing same so as to appropriately educate patients in self care and management of their disease state.
7. Coordinates and assists in the coordination of staff orientation and ongoing training and competencies.
8. Communicates in a timely manner, to CV service line leadership any physician, staff or operational needs or concerns.
9. Maintains day to day operational responsibility for the surgical a! spects of the CV service line including staffing (inclusive of on call)! ,case scheduling, and ensuring each room is equipped with sterile surgical supplies required for the surgeries scheduled.
10. Coordinates and arranges for supplies specific to the service keeping in mind physician, patient, and staff needs as well as keeping within capital and operating budget parameters.
11. Uses appropriate interpersonal styles and methods and collaborates with the unit leadership team in guiding staff toward achievement of unit and organizational goals.
12. Assists with the development and implementation of policies, procedures, protocols, and coordinates the needs of the patients.
13. Represents the department and service line as a leadership presence to internal and external customers.
14. Actively participates in leadership activities and meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Current Michigan nursing license required.
2. BSN or BS in related field preferred.
3. BLS required. ACL! S preferred.
4. Five or more years in the surgical environment is required, with a minimum of 2 years in CV surgery.
5. Leadership experience in the surgical environment is highly preferred.
6. Attendance at continuing education series on leadership development courses is required.
7. Ability to problem-solve, and effective verbal and written communication skills is required.
8. Must possess strong nursing processes, critical thinking, advanced assessment skills, and knowledge about the care of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
9. Must possess i nterpersonal skills to effectively lead the Patient Care Team.
10. Must be physically capable of standing, walking, stooping, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
11. Successful completion of Conscious Sedation Competency is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Unpredictable environment with wide variations in the types of pa! tients, acuity levels, times of admissions/discharges and the number of! patients/health care team members.
2. Works in a standard patient care area with varying conditions regarding temperature control and potential exposure to hazardous materials, including the typical hazards associated with the healthcare environment.
