QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: to perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned

Works with small groups of students or individual students under the direct supervision of the teacher

Performs other miscellaneous tasks that support student achievement

Manages and instructs students on appropriate behavior using positive behavior support strategies consistent wi! th Board policy and procedures

Assist students in mee! ting self-help, health and behavior needs including toileting and personal care needs

Helps maintain pool area, supplies, equipment and facilities in a clean/safe condition. Includes cleaning/disinfecting classroom environment

Assists teacher and classroom paraprofessionals in changing, lifting and preparing students for pool activities

Participates in special instructional activities to meet program and student goals (e.g. loading/unloading busses, physical education, swimming, therapeutic activities, etc.)

Understand and be aware of medical needs of students and follow medical protocols under the supervision of a nurse as appropriate

Maintain confidentiality

Follows established policies/procedures re student medical concerns, safety, student rights, emergency/disaster plans, and so forth

Regular and predictable attendance

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent
Lifeguard certification preferred or ability to obtain within one year

Must meet the definition of Highly Qualified as defined by the No Child Left Behind Act by possessing one or more of the following:

An Associate’s Degree (or higher)

Sixty (60) or more semester hours of college credit from a degree granting institution

Certificate verifying the passage of the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC Basic Skills)

Verification of the passage of the WorkKeys Reading for Information, Writing & Applied Mathematics

Passing score on the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Must be eligible to work in the United States

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

Ability to understand and carry out instructions furnished in written! or oral form

Ability to work with students with learning disa! bilities, autism, emotional, physical, health, sensory, cognitive, and/or multiple impairments

Ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions

Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community

Must have essential pool safety skills

PHYSICAL DEMANDS : The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to remain in a stationary position and is frequently required to move about the inside of the building and in a pool. This employee will need to be able to position themselves to interact with students in and out of the pool. The person in this position frequently communicates with teachers, parents and students, including reading to students, and must be able to exchange accurate information ! in these situations. The employee must be able to engage in the physical management of students in order to maintain a safe environment for students and others. This employee must regularly lift up to 50 lbs and/or individually push or pull up to 100 lbs. This employee will need to be able to assist with the physical care of students with disabilities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT : The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee is frequently required to interact with students, staff and occasionally with the public. The employee will be required to accompany students into a swimming pool. The employee will be around humidity and chemicals involved with public swimming pools. The employee will be directly responsible for the safety and well-being of students.

T! ERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
The work year is determined by the number o! f days students are in attendance during the regular school calendar and/or specific program needs. The work day is seven hours with two fifteen minute breaks and a half hour unpaid lunch. The hourly rate is based on the WWAP Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Swimming will be at both Dyer and McGrath pools. The hourly rate is based on the WWAP Collective Bargaining Agreement.

EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated by the employee’s supervisor with input from the Director of Special Education.
