Part Time Direct Support Professional

Location: Lansing, Michigan

Direct Support Professionals work as part of the professional team responsible for bringing happiness, hope, gentleness and rich fun experience into the lives of the people we support. The Direct Support Professional works hand on with the persons served, encouraging community involvement, active participation and direction over their lives.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

1. To treat all individuals with dignity and respect.
2. To support individuals to take control of their lives, to make wise decisions that enhances their goals.
3. To support individuals to take on as much control as possible over the routines and activities in their home.
4. To teach, assist and support individuals in the community and at home so that the individual is able to learn, practice and master skills that enable him/her to enhance his/her status by assuming socially valued roles.
5. To support each individual’s existing relationships and increase their network of friends and acquaintances.
6. To insure that all individuals are supported to explore and express their interests for community membership.
7. Assist individual with daily hygiene needs (including personal care, brief change) if needed.
8. Assist individual with routine daily cleaning of personal space (if needed).
9. To ensure that the health and well-being of individuals are met by accompanying individuals on appointments as needed, administering medications (or supporting them to self-medicate) in accordance with the Person Centered Plan, Licensure guidelines, DCH guidelines and the policies and procedures of Bay Human Services.
10. Provide a well-balanced diet prepared to meet the individuals needs (when applicable), following all instructions given by the Physician and Health Care Coordinator (Program designated nurse).
11. Assist with community activities such as purchasing clothing, personal items, and visits with friends and family.
12. To implement the Individual Plan of Service/Person Centered Plan and strategies as written and at the frequency stated in the plan. Collect data accurately. Consistently follow written plan instructions, House Rules and intervention strategies as instructed.
13. Maintain cleanliness of the home through daily, weekly, monthly cleaning duties. Including laundry, dishes, bed making, vacuuming, offering opportunities for individuals to participate, learn and increase independence.
14. Maintain all required certifications such as CPR/First Aid, medication administration.
15. To complete agency training programs in a timely manner and participate in other professional development as required by supervisor.
16. To facilitate teamwork between all team members via communication, sharing of responsibilities and a positive, constructive attitude.
17. To follow and support the Mission, Policies and Procedures of Bay Human Services Inc.
18. Observes persons served for any change in condition and documents changes and reports to management.
19. Assists persons served at the time of admission with personal items and helps familiarize them to the home.
20. Assure persons served are dressed appropriately
21. Assists persons served into and out of bed and or wheelchair as needed
22. Assists in carrying out planned activities
23. Assures that all duties are completed and documented, as well as unusual incidents involving consumers, staff or other persons affecting the home and including seizures, accidents, or other medical emergencies.
24. Knows and follows emergency home procedures for fire, tornadoes, accidents, or other serious incidents affecting residents or staff.
25. Assists in supervising and transporting residents to and from activities in the community.
26. Distributes medications to residents who require them after completing required training.
27. Participates actively in planned in service and staff meetings.
28. Completes other job duties as directed by supervisor.

Job Qualifications:

1. Must be 18 years old.
2. Must possess a good attendance record.
3. Ability to meet physical demands of the job including stooping, bending, turning, stretching, lifting, assisting residents, making beds and moving equipment.
4. Must accept risk of working in a group setting where employees are exposed to communicable diseases and occasional combativeness.
5. Must possess good visual and audio acuity necessary to detect changes in the person served condition.
6. Good Physical Health, to include a negative reaction to a TB test.
7. Be of Good Moral Character, meet criminal background check criteria.
8. Possess a safe driving record and current licensure.
9. Provide three character references.
10. Schedules are determined by program needs and maintained by assigned Home Managers and Regional Directors. Programs operate 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. DSP staff are expected to work assigned hours.
