Under general supervision and according to established procedures, administers chemotherapy treatments to oncology patients. Effectively communicates with patients, families and physicians concerning therapy. Conducts patient education, provides follow-up care and maintains accurate records.
GENERAL DUTIES
1. Supervises, including assignment and evaluation of subordinate team members, and provides patient care on a daily basis.
2. Participates in the employment process related to peers and subordinate team members; addresses employee problems, complaints, disputes or requests as the first level of supervision; evaluates their performance post hire; and is authorized to issue work improvement plans to subordinates.
3. Adheres to the mission, vision, values and code of Business Conduct as established by the DMC and its associate facilities.
4. Complies with approved policies, procedures, guidelines and standards as established by the DMC and its associated facilities.
5. Demonstrates an understanding of and a commitment to customer service values of respect, courtesy, ownership, privacy, professionalism and responsiveness.
6. Completes mandatory education and training as defined by the DMC and the specific employer-facility.
7. Maintains a safe working environment through compliance with established policies and procedures and timely reporting of safety variances.
8. Demonstrates a commitment to improving the work environment through participation in meetings, timely and effective communication and an embracement of cultural diversity.
PRINICIPAL/ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1. Administers and documents chemotherapy treatments in compliance with nursing policies and procedures.
2. Provides patient and family education regarding expected actions and possible side effects of chemotherapy protocol.
3. Collaborates with oncology staff in planning future chemotherapy treatments and in deciding where treatment is to be given.
4. Reviews patient treatments for compliance with established protocols and reports discrepancies.
5. In consultation with the physicians, plans future care of patient who are suffering from various side effects of chemotherapy.
6. Maintains records of all patients who are under treatment, consults daily with oncology staff and participates in discussion pertaining to treatment of patients receiving chemotherapy.
7. Obtains blood specimens via venipuncture when necessary and monitors results. Starts IV line in patients including periphery lines and ports.
8. Counsels patients and families with the various problems related to cancer. Triages patients on phone with respect to problem solving.
9. Provides assistance in procedures other than chemotherapy, as necessary.
10. In collaboration with the physician, provides emergency care for patients experiencing acute toxicities or complication such as extravasation and anophylapis. Minimum Requirements
1. Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
2. BSN preferred.
3. Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Michigan.
4. Two years of Oncology/Chemotherapy infusion experience.
5. Certification from an approved accrediting agency in Oncology, preferred.
