PRT operates a diverse network of 19 nurseries in Canada and the United States enabling us to grow a wide variety of high-quality container forest seedlings for all climatic and site conditions. Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Operations Manager and the Seed Orchard Technician, this position is responsible for carrying out day to day activities in the orchards in order to maximize the production of high-quality seed from the orchard trees. The position is non-continuous (seasonal). During the off season, the SOT Assistant is expected to assist and take part in other nursery work which may include supervisor, quality assurance or machine operator duties. No shift work required. Candidates should have a keenness to learn about the seed orchard activities, keep accurate records, work independently and efficiently. Candidates may be interviewed and tested to assess their abilities and qualifications for this position.
Key Responsibilities:
The Seed Orchard Technician Assistant will be responsible for the following:
- Follow the instructions for daily orchard activities
- Collect data on orchard inventories and maps
- Collect scion material and graft onto root stock, if required
- Assisting to implement an effective G.A. program
- Conduct pollen and cone inventories
- Fertilize, prune and irrigate orchard trees
- Assess seed embryo development, if required
- Assist in cone pick activities
- Winterize irrigation header pipes and the pump house
- Operate and maintain orchard equipment
- Pest monitoring with an effective IPM program
- Apply pesticides and obtain a valid pesticide applicator certificate, if required
- Attend ITAC and BCSOC seminars
- Keep up to date with activities relevant to the operation of the seed orchards
- Adhere to PRT safety and environmental practices and policies
- Perform other jobs as designated by the Operations Manager
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
The successful applicant will have the following qualifications:
- Be highly motivated and able to work independently
- Demonstrate a high level of sound judgment and reasoning
- Possess a high school diploma. Certificates or training in horticulture, seed orchards, or forestry
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a growing or seed orchard role
- Excellent time management skills with the ability to maintain maintenance schedules in a dynamic and changing environment
- Possess a valid drivers license
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and e-mail programs.
- Great organizational and record keeping skills
