The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 1880, is in the heart of downtown Los Angeles and is the largest private employer in the city of Los Angeles. In 2011, the University opened its first office in San Francisco. This office is responsible for establishing philanthropic support for USC’s strategic goals and objectives and cultivating and maintaining a visible presence for the university in Northern California.

USC University Advancement is seeking an Executive Director for our San Francisco Office. Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Advancement, the incumbent will direct the comprehensive major and principal gift fundraising efforts in the Bay Area region.

Domestic travel, evening and weekend events will be required from time to time. Candidates must reside in the Bay Area and be commuting distance to the San Francisco Office.

Responsibilities:

  • Directs the comprehensive major and principal gift fundraising efforts for USC’s San Francisco Office.

  • Directs the identification, cultivation and solicitation of major and principal prospects, and develops strategic plans for cultivating participation. Oversees the development and management of donor relations and prospect management systems, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Responsible for development, preparation and presentation of formal fundraising proposals to major donors and prospects.

  • Ensures compliance with university fundraising policies, goals, and procedures.

  • Develops and implements strategies for securing financial support from a personal portfolio of approximately 75 prospects, including identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding principal gift donors in support of the University of Southern California.

  • Manages, leads, and coaches/develops a team of development and administrative support staff. Personnel administration includes interviewing, hiring, training, performance assessment, counseling, discipline, and salary administration.

  • Develops and manages San Francisco Office fiscal year operating budget and provides financial status reports and projections to Associate Vice President of Advancement.

  • Collaborates with key leaders within the USC development community to establish fundraising goals and initiatives. Develops, implements, monitors, and assesses strategies to achieve goals.

  • Provides strategic direction for volunteer and support staff recruitment efforts.

  • Opens the office to USC Administrators and staff hosting activities/events in the region, when appropriate, and may host a small number of events to support major and principal gift fundraising efforts.

  • Participates in professional meetings and conferences and/or contributes to maintain professional contacts and visibility for program.

  • Develops and implements security related procedures such as office opening and closing routines, recognition of duress signals and key controls. Coordinates security activities with building and maintains standards for security conscious awareness and behavior. Ensures dissemination of security-related information to staff.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The university reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • 7 years of experience required.

  • Experience in major campaign, fundraising, and/or senior volunteer group management.

  • Experience in development, maintaining meaningful relationships with a wide variety of internal/external stakeholders.

  • Three years of management experience.

  • Ability to self-manage, prioritize work assignments and manage multiple deadlines.

  • Experience maintaining and interpreting large datasets and database systems.

  • Excellent planning, organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Detail oriented with excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree preferred.

  • 10 years of experience preferred.

The annual base salary range for this position is $185,000 - $200,000. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
